Welcome
People's choices are affected by their needs. However, needs don't always determine choices. This project seeks to discover how needs affect choices, and whether people make the logical choice for their situation. According to Maslow, human needs have a hierarchy of importance. Generally, people will not seek higher level needs until basic, lower-level needs are secured. This project will explore human needs in 3 parts. In part 1, students will build a civilization from scratch. After researching a region of Earth, students will decide how to progressively meet the needs of colonists on a planet identical to Earth. In part 2, students will analyze literature by looking at characters' needs and choices. In part 3, students will research a local need and then organize and carry out a service project to meet that need. Each project can function as a stand-alone project, or function as part of the larger whole, Parts 1 and 2 meet several Common Core Standards for English Language Arts.
Parts 2 and 3 are currently under construction. Please check back later.
Although this project was designed for 7th grade students, part 3 may actually work better with high school students who can provide their own transportation while organizing and implementing their service project.
